Economic development and the role of different levels of government
The focus of this paper is on the role of different levels of government in economic development with emphasis on countries in transition, which are in the process of decentralisation and prepare for integration into the European Union. It is aimed to identify and clarify different tasks and activities of relevant institutions and stakeholders, which have influence on economic and regional development. The ideal followed is the possibility of balancing free market requirements and efficient government policy. In the process of decentralisation it appears that the lack of coordination between different levels of Government has serious impacts on economic development. The new role of regional and local governments in enhancing economic development requires clarification of responsibilities. An interdisciplinary approach for economic policy creation is required, taking social, political and economic factors into account.
