Algae and diatoms in monitoring of Drava River, Croatia

Investigation was conducted seasonally during the six years period from 1999 to 2004 in River Drava system of reservoirs, Varaždin, Čakovec and Dubrava, situated in the North part of Croatia. Phytoplankton abundances were established by filtrating 10 L of the water through plankton net (25 &#956; m) at the surface, in a shallow, and at different depths in deeper parts of the system. Phytobenthos samples were taken simultaneously scraping the sunken trees, stones or pebbles. Index of saprobity was calculated for each sample. To explore the value of such monitoring procedure, on phytoplankton data set more indexes were calculated: Trophic Diatom Index, Generic Diatom Index, Shannon-Wienner index and Pielou's index. On phytobenthos data set, except saprobity index, species richness for each sample was calculated. Preliminary results on both plankton and benthos abundance data set showed certain grouping of samples according to year in NMDS ordination space (program package PRIMER) indicating differences between years of investigation. Using computer program Statistica 6.0 one-way ANOVAs with post-hoc Bonferroni tests were performed on each index data set. There were statistically significant differences (p<0.05) between years for all indexes of phytoplankton assemblage and in both indexes of phytobenthos assemblages. During the six year period, all indexes for phytoplankton showed increase of average index value (except Generic Diatom Index whose average value decreased). Index of saprobity and species richness on phytobenthos data set presented same general trends. Those results show that all calculated indexes indicated a change in both, phytoplankton and phytobenthos assemblages, although they did not correspond to the single year or event.
