Cosmic radiation and aircrew exposure
When the primary particles from space, mainly protons, enter the atmosphere, they interact with the air nuclei and induce the cosmic-ray shower. The radiation field in aircraft at altitude is complex, with many types of radiation of large energy range ; the field comprises mainly photons, electrons, positrons and neutrons. The cosmic radiation dose for crews of the aircrafts A320 and ATR 42 was measured with the TLD-100 (LiF:Mg, Ti) detectors and the Mini 6100 semiconductor dosemeter radon concentration in the atmosphere was measured with the Alpha Guard radon detector. The total annual dose equivalent estimated for the aircraft crew (A320), by the flight level of 12 km, was 5.3 mSv.
