Modeling of RB49 removal from synthetic wastewater by AOPs
Organic synthetic dyes are specifically designed to resist fading upon exposure to light, water and oxidizing agents and with very few exceptions they are xenobiotic. Wastewater containing organic synthetic dyes could be toxic to the aquatic life and dangerous to the human health as well. So there is a clear need to treat dye wastewater prior to discharge into the effluent. This research is addressed to Fenton (Fe2+/H2O2) and Fenton “ like” (Fe3+/H2O2, Fe0/H2O2) processes for the treatment of synthetic dye wastewater containing C.I. Reactive Blue 49. Reaction kinetics was determined on the basis of UV/VIS and TOC measurements. A mathematical model to describe the kinetics of dye decolourization and mineralization was successfully developed. It was established that decolourization and mineralization reactions of RB49 follow the kinetics of the second order. The model can be applied for prediction of profiles of other species participating in Fenton process, such as H2O2, ferrous and ferric ions.
