Village – free choice or destiny for the young rural population (a case study on the rural community of Vođinci)

The most rural areas in Croatia characterize a low density settlement, a long-term exodus trend (loss of critical mass of innovative and enterprising population), social isolation of rural communities and a decrease in agricultural activities. Therefore, Croatia is facing a huge and complex task of revitalization and reconstruction (diversification) of rural areas. If revitalization is defined as "a comprehensive revival of economic, spatial, biologically vital, cultural and other functions of a specific area" (Nejašmić, 1991) - a rural area in our case - an importance of the role the human factor, namely young, play in that process is beyond doubt. In this paper we research how the young perceive the development difficulties and priorities of the rural community as a place to live and work. Are they perceive themselves as a social isolation group in own community and in the global society? We are interested in which proportion they are motivated to stay in the village and which factors determined those motives. The analysis is based on a pilot survey conducted among the young in Vođinci village, located in eastern region of Croatia.
