New records on the evolution and relationships of the Campanula pyramidalis-C. secundiflora-C. versicolor Aggregate
Aggregate Pyramidalis is of narrow, south-European distribution, represented only by three species. The Illyrian-Adriatic/Balkan endemic C. pyramidalis L. form this unique group of the "isophylloid" campanulas of Balkan origin together with its two closest relatives, the southern Balkan/southern Italian C. versicolor Andrews and the southeast Serbian/northeast Montenegran subendemic C. secundiflora Visiani et Pančić. Damboldt (1965) excluded Pyramidalis-relatives from his Isophylla group on the basis of their morphological differences. Surprisingly, according to the latest nuclear and chloroplast DNA research, as well as the comparative isoenzyme activity, it seems undoubtedly that the nearest relative to the Pyramidalis-taxa is a small, relict and subendemic aggregate Waldsteiniana, consisting of only two "isophylloid" Dinaric (Adriatic) Alps species: the Mt Velebit C. waldsteiniana Schult., and the Mt Učka C. tommasiniana C. Koch.
