Efficency of polyglycol bone replacement in healing of bone defects measured by densitometry
Aim: Periapical surgery is well-established endodontic procedure for preservation of teeth with persistent periapical processes following failed non-surgical root canal treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate healing of bone defects after implantation of a new alloplastic copolymer – polyglycol bone implant (Fisiograft, Ghimas, Italy). Methodology: Endodontic surgery (apicoectomy) was performed in 45 patients on maxillary teeth in intercanine region. For each patient four radiovisiographic x- ray images were made: preoperatively and in period of one month, six and 12 months after treatment. Density of bone was measured in ten points at the edge of periapical bone defect together with clinical evaluation. Results: Densitometric measurements showed successful healing in 38 (84%) patients and failure in 7 (16 %) cases with persisting bone defects. Conclusion: The advantages of material used in our investigation are: slower biodegradation, which ensures suitable area for the bone apposition, simple application in clinical practice and possibility of a mutual combination of all three available forms. These results indicate that polyglycol copolymer bone implants can be successfully used in cases with large bone defects.
