Thermodynmaic phenomena in metaphorical and metonymic mappings in English and Croatian
The present paper deals with thermodynamic phenomena in metaphors and metonymies in English and Croatian. The first part of the paper presents theoretical views on cognitive linguistics, metaphors and metonymies in general, paying special attention to metaphors and metonymies of emotions (anger and lust, specifically) and providing an explanation of thermodynamics. The second part of the paper is a contrastive analysis of metaphors and metonymies of anger and lust in English and Croatian. As might have been expected, the number of metaphors of the type in question is significantly larger than the number of metonymies. THE HOT FLUID IN A CONTAINER metaphor is the most important metaphor for the conceptualization of anger in English. The same metaphor is also pervasive in Croatian, even though not as frequent as in English. There are not that many metonymies related to anger (HEAT FOR ANGER and INTERNAL PRESSURE FOR ANGER). For the conceptualization of lust, the most important target domain is fire in both English and Croatian. Consequently, thermodynamic phenomena are a minor element conceptualizing lust (INTERNAL PRESSURE INSIDE A CONTAINER, INTERNAL PRESSURE FOR LUST).
