Water and marshland vegetation in the Neretva River delta (Croatia)
The Neretva River delta, located on the southern coast of the Republic of Croatia, extends over a surface area of about 170 km2 and empties into the Adriatic Sea. The delta stretches across Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 70% of its area belonging to Croatia. Prior to this, a significant amount of the water habitat was lost to various human activities, mostly in the lower part (Croatia) of the delta. The distribution and condition of the water and marsh plant communities in the delta has been studied throughout a ten-year period. In the lower part of the delta, communities of Ammophiletea, Salicornietea, Juncetea maritimi and Ruppietea maritimae were presented, replaced now by communities of Nerio-Tamaricetea. In upper part of the delta only freshwater and marshland communities were recorded: Lemnetea, Potametea and Phragmito-Magnocaricetea. The most endangered communities in the whole area belong to the Fimbristylion dichotomae alliance (Isoëto-Nanojuncetea).
