An event-related potential study of morphosyntax in Croatian

Event-related potentials proved to be a good method of studying language processing, especially language comprehension. This method provides a millisecond resolution image of brain activity and offers the possibility of studying the automatic, non-conscious features of language processing. In this study electrophysiological correlates of morphosyntactic features in Croatian are sought for. In previous event-related potential studies of language processing in Croatian typical ERP components were obtained: N400 in sentences with semantic violation and left anterior negativity (LAN) and P600 for syntactically erroneous sentences. However, only one type of error was studied (agreement errors). In this study Croatian pseudo-sentences will be presented to the subjects in order to manipulate morphosyntactic features of the stimuli, but without changing the canonical word order in Croatian (SVO). This design will allow for studying morphological errors such as wrong choice of case markers without semantic interference.
