Natural Poplar Stands and Gene Conservation of Populus nigra in Croatia
Riparian poplar forests typically occupy forest lands which rae not suitable for other plant specis because of a higher risk of flood and a higher proportion of sand in the soil. Thanks to the richness of its hydrographic network, Croatia has a relatively large area of alluvial soils which provide opportunities for the development of natural poplar and willow stands within the areas of large forest complexes. The antrophogenic impact on rivers through the construction of infrastructure facilities results in radical changes in their natural water regimes, which directly affects the alluvial soil water-air regime in natural poplar habitats. The paper deals with possibilities for natural regeneration of poplar stands in Croatia and with their gene conservation measures.
