Reconstructing the environments of a Jurassic Park: petrographic and stable isotope analysis of carbonate rocks with dinosaur footprints from Istria
The objective of this research was to use stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon in conjunction with careful petrographic observations of carbonate rocks to unravel details about marginal marine or coastal environments in which large quadrupedal sauropod dinosaurs left their footprints during the Late Tithonian. The study was carried out on a 14.5 m thick succession of strata that belong to the Kirmenjak Member of the Poreč Formation exposed in the Kirmenjak Quarry of western Istria. The focus was on a horizon with abundant dinosaur footprints located approximately in the middle of the succession.
