SURGE WAVE PENETRATION INTO HELICAL TRANSFORMER WINDING

Using the multicoductor transmission-line theory for the analysis of electrodynamics transients in the helical transformer winding the terminals of the winding appear as discrete irregularities for traveling waves during the surge. Boundary layers produce the current transients which, in zhe TEM approximation, penetrate undistored inside the winding. There is a low order state space model of the transients in the time domain. Besides analytic eigenvalue analysis which gives the frequency and the damping, instructive results are obtained for the initial and the final oscilating current transient states of the step voltage surge.
