Increase of Urban Road Network Throughput Capacity by Directing Traffic Flows so as to Reduce Unnecessary Intersecting
The paper analyses the possibilities of directing the traffic flows at at-grade intersections in order to avoid unnecessary intersecting of the traffic flows. Thus, the throughput capacity of the intersection and the traffic network in general can be significantly increased even without technical and building reconstruction of the intersections themselves. By recording the vehicle itinerary in the network, the satellite navigation can indicate points and intensities of unnecessary intersecting of traffic flows. By analysing the relations between the routes, the causes of unnecessary intersecting may be determined and adequate measures to eliminate such a situation can be undertaken. This can substantially increase the average speed, reduce the waiting times at intersections, reduce the adverse impact of the traffic on the environment and traffic safety, including also the transportation costs.
