Corrosion of concrete and protective measures
Sulphates present in solid, groundwater, seawater, decaying organic matter, and industrial effluent surrounding a concrete structure may penetrate to concrete and react with existing hydration products. These reactions can cause crack in the concrete structure. The corrosion resistance properties of mortars containing silica fume obtained from the ferro-silicon production (ex The Dalmacija Ferro-alloys Works, Dugi Rat, Croatia) related to control mortars containing no silica fume additions were presented and discussed. In addition, the results of the various tests on the effect of the silica fume on the corrosive behaviours of the steel in the reinforced mortars exposed in a chloride environmental were presented and discussed.
Portland cement mortars; corrosion; sulphates; chloride; silica fume.
