Aerococcus viridans as a causative agent of pleural empyema in a patient with HIV infection
Aerococcus organisms are gram-positive cocci with a strong inclination to form tetrades. These bacteria have rarely been encountered as human pathogens. We report an HIV infected who presented with a one-months history of fever, cough and slowly progressive dyspnea. His CD4 cell count was 73 per mm3. A left sided pleural effusion was diagnosed. On thoracocentesis gross pus was collected. Gram positive cocci were observed on microscopic examination and the bacteria wassubsequently identified as Aerococcus viridans by the API 20 S system. The patient was treated with thoracic drainage and high dose penisillin. The recovery was complete. To our knowledge Aerococcus viridans has not been associated with pleural empyema in patients with HIV infection.
