Intravarietal ampelographic and genetic variability in Istrian Malvasia
Nowadays, indigenous grapevine variety, Istrian Malvasia, is the most commercially important and widely cultivated grapevine variety in Istria (Croatia). Despite its importance, until now it was not systematically investigated. The aim of this work was to examine the phenotypic and genetic variability of this cultivar by means of ampelographic and genetic techniques. The observed phenotypic variability within cv. Istrian Malvasia was verified by meaning of morphologic and phyllometric analysis and potentially biotypes were described. Despite the expected polymorphism all analyzed samples showed the same microsatellite profile. In our case microsatellite analysis coupled with the ampelographic observations proved to be an effective method for correctly identifying a cultivar. Intravarietal variability was investigated by AFLP method and preliminary results of chosen samples were presented.
