Dialogue: an ancient and contemporary educational strategy
Our objective is to show how we can teach certain linguistic content and, at the same time, follow some of the basic principles that make the teaching process conducive to developing learner qualities that will help learners in life-long education. Although collaborative work has always been seriously neglected, there is substantial evidence that teachers are starting to rediscover a number of good old educational strategies, such as classroom questioning, in order to improve their teaching techniques and harmonize them with the current trends related to learner-centred education. Teachers have always asked questions that elicit predictable answers. The questions we are going to discuss in this paper are open questions and their answers are not always predictable. Both teachers and students are engaged in a dialogue which produces answers and outcomes that not only enable the students to construct knowledge but encourage their cognitive development as well as take care of affective factors such as motivation, attitudes or language anxiety.
