Psychological Structure of European Identity

Research presented in this paper is a part of the project named « National and European identity» , financed by the CLEEPSE. As a part of the project, a research has been conducted on 654 subjects from Croatia and Serbia, both Croats and Serbs, male and female, different levels of education. The aim of this paper was to determine the structure of the European identity, a new and emerging kind of social identity in the South-Eastern Europe. Instruments used were European identity scale (Cinnirela) and scale of attitudes toward the Europe and European integrations (STEIN). Factor analysis with Promax rotation extracted five primary factors, total variance explained 47.1%: emotional component of European identity, cognitive component (determined by three factors: perception of technological advantages as threatening to the old ways of life, fear of globalization and enlargement of Europe, perception of the European Union as an instrument for better life), and action component of European identity. Second level factor analysis extracted only one factor (total variance explained was 48.3%). All five primary factors were highly correlated with this factor (0.63 to 0.77) These results implicate that European identity is a complex social identity determined by emotional, cognitive and conative components, whereas cognitive component is defined by attitudes toward the different and new life style and attitudes toward the creation of unified Europe, perceived as a symbol of the globalization processes.
