Three Events, Agencies and Realizations of National Minorities' Heritage in Croatia.
The author compares representations of national minorities in Croatia in three recent events: a manifestation dedicated to "cultural activities" of national minorities, a folklore festival directed towards preservation and revitalization of "authentic folklore", and a world music festival aimed at introducing "different cultures" and musics to Croatian audiences. All three events were guided by the idea of promoting national minorities' heritage, but their notions of how to realize this goal and the final outcomes were different. The author delineates these differences, which could be summarized as representing minorities as dignified, traditional and extraordinary, highlights junctions between these three events, and explains how the ideas of self-representation, ethnic grouping and inter-ethnic (or beyond-ethnic) communication are managed in different musical settings.
