Croatian managerial-entrepreneurial elite and strategies of growth

In this paper the author is trying to restart a broader discussion about the relationship between new economic elites (in this case: Croatian managerial-entrepreneurial elite) and modernization. We are particularly interested to describe and identify the possible differences among SME entrepreneurs and managers of larger enterprises regarding the type of the realized and perspective growth. Possible relationships between managers/enterpreneurs and enterprise growth are analyzed using sociological concept of the modernization potential which today's Croatian business elite express in it's business and social behaviour. Our starting hypothesis is that looking on the growing enterprises there are no significant differences between professional top-managers and owners- managers in their respective professional and socio-cultural characteristics The available empirical data do not discover any significant socio-cultural differences between top-managers and owners-managers when considering the achieved and expected enterprise growth. At this analytical point, we also did not identified some significant differences between de novo entrepreneurs and former socialist managers regarding the achieved enterprise performance. Based on this experience, we believe future sociological and economic researchs must give some more definite answers on the following questions: a) which dimension of modernization potential of the recent managerial-entrepreneurial elite has determining effect on the successful ( and less successful) growth strategies, b) which part of that elite is producing higher economic growth and which is performing poorly, and c) how to measure real and desirable social outcomes of the achieved enterprise growth within community and larger social environment?
