Designing a Public Key Infrastructure implementation for calibration laboratories
The growth of the Internet over the years has been fuelled by the prospects of new possibilities for calibration laboratories, metrologists and customers. The internet-enabled metrology is developing fast in recent years and, while it offers new possibilities, at the same time it must provide the security of data transmission and storage. Information security has become a critical part of information and communication systems that are used in ordinary metrology laboratories. Although it is widely recognized that public key cryptography has the potential to provide the necessary security service to enable secure electronic communication and document exchange, experience has shown that designing, implementing and managing public key infrastructures is a complex and risk-prone. This paper identifies and explores some of the critical elements in a PKI project and describes how these issues are being managed.
