Evaluation of histological characteristics of colorectal cancer
BACKGROUND. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in developed countries. Besides other prognostic indicators, perineural and vascular invasion have been described to influence prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. AIM. The purpose of this study was to describe the factors associated with perineural and vascular invasion in patients with colorectal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS. Pathology reports from 135 patients who underwent resection of primary colorectal cancer between 2002 and 2003 at a tertiary University Hospital were analyzed. RESULTS. Patients with perineural invasion were younger than those without perineural invasion. Both perineural and vascular invasion was more common in the left colon and rectum than in the right colon. In patients with Dukes C cancers, perineural invasion was significantly more common than in node negative patients (p<0.05). In the left colon and rectum, perineural invasion was associated with poorer tumor differentiation (p<0.05)). Vascular invasion was also significantly more common in patients with Dukes C cancers compared to node negative patients (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS. This study identified factors associated with perineural and vascular invasion in patients with colorectal cancer.
