Electrochemical DNA Detection at Novel Nanoelectrodes
Novel DNA detection strategies are needed for the diagnosis of infectious and genetic diseases. Most high-throughput methods currently available rely on optical readout methods, and existing technologies are not suitable for clinical diagnostic applications and pharmaceutical research. Electrochemical nucleic acids detection assays at the nanoscale level may afford superior detection technologies. We are investigating the potential biosensing applications of DNA covalently bound to nanoelectrodes (NEEs). A highly sensitive electrocatalytic process is used for the detection of the hybridization events (1). Significant sample amplification is achieved at NEEs, indicating that adapting DNA detection methods to this platform will have significant utility. Moreover, template assisted growth process of NEE ensembles allows for variation of working electrode surface area and shape. NEEs are also amenable to multiplexed DNA detection allowing for possible implementation in high-throughput clinical diagnosis.
