W.M.Thackeray: "The Rose and the Ring"
"The Rose and the Ring", written by W. M. Thackeray, cannot be categorized without difficulty. It contains a number of contradictory elements, which are not only confusing to theorists, but also make it problematic to decide about the ideal age of the readership. The most distinctive features of this book are humour, irony, intertextuality, and fairy-tale elements. Through humour and irony Thackeray parodises the society of his times and the false virtues. Therefore, this book can be referred to as the author’ s comment on social events of his time. On the other hand, the story was put together for children. It is appropriate for children and it can easily be used in an ELT lesson. Activities are suggested for English classes with fifth-graders. The book has not become well known in Croatia, and there were only two publications of the Croatian translation more than fifty years ago.
