From the Environmental Responsibility of Slovenian SMEs to Their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Environmental and societal issues are emphasising the social role of enterprises, including all size classes, even the smallest ones, so-called micro enterprises. In the paper attention is paid to Slovenian SMEs. They are confronting increasing and changing expectations, demands and claims for accountability not only regarding economic, but also environmental and social performance. Environmental responsibility is one of three dimensions of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) promoted also by EU. A range of motives and many barriers are decisive for proactive or reactive environmental activities of SMEs. For determine how environmentally responsible Slovenian SMEs are in the period just before joining the EU (in May 2004), some aspects the context of environmental management system (including environmental standards and indicators) are investigated. Research findings regarding some aspects of environmental responsibility give an initial insight in the field of the complex issue the Corporate Social Responsibility is raising in SMEs.
