Stroke mortality in intensive care unit in last 5 years
The aim of this study was to evaluate stroke mortality and its causes in patients who were treated in intensive care unit (ICU) in last 5 years. We included data of 628 patients treated in ICU in last 5 years- 275 (44%) men and 353 (56%) women. Conventional risk factors, stroke subtypes and direct causes of death were evaluated. There is decrease in crude 28 days case fatality in last 5 years (23, 3% vrs 19, 1%) and in both gender , men (21, 3% vrs 17, 5%) and women (25, 3% vrs 20, 6%). Mean age increased, especially in women (pooled mean age 73, 4 ± 10, 5 ; 77± 10, 7 in women and 74± 10, 9 in men). Direct cause of death was mostly in both gender together CVI 5 years ago, cerebral coma was second leading cause and haemorrhage was at the third place (61%, 19%, 16%), in the year 2004. cerebral coma was at first place, CVI at second place adn haemorrhage at third place (46%, 23%, 12%), other diagnosis have not shown statistically significant changes. Ischemic changes were present in most patients (varied 43, 5-55, 5% ), while haemorrhage was present in suprisingly low number of patients (varied 20-30%) in last 5 years. Conventional risk factors were present as follovs: hypertension, myocardiopathy, atrial fibrillation, hypercholesterolemia, hypetriglyceridemia, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipoproteinemia and ischemic heart disease. As in s countries in transition, in Croatia stroke population have more similarities with former West European countries than former East European countries according to modern principles of acute stroke treatement.
