Archaeozoological analysis of animal remains from Viničica-Josipdol, Croatia
Osteological animal remains originate from archaeological site Viničica, Josipdol (Croatia), dating at 1st century BC. There were 770 osteological fragments totally, but only 360 were in condition for archaeozoological analysis. Taxonomic affiliation was determined at 59, 44% specimens: the majority of bones belong to small ruminants (sheep, goats and roe deer) ; the follows are the bones of cattle, pigs and red deer. Findings of horse and marten bones are below 1%. More than 23% of specimen belongs to teeth, than follows remains of mandible and skulls. Bones of proximal and distal parts are evently present. Although the age was estimated at small number of specimens, it is visible that animals were killed at about first year or little bit older. The butchery traces are visible mostly on legs long bones, but also at some ribs and vertebra. All of the red deer antler fragments are sawed and prepared to tools.
