Računalna analiza oštećene kupole šibenske katedrale
Computational analysis of the octagonal ribbed dome of the Šibenik cathedral, injured in September 1991 by a Yugoslav Army bomb-shell, was carried out in 1992, i.e. immediately after the damage. Finite element method analysis, made by computational system COSMOS/M, using 3D SOLID elements, confirmed that the damage, a circular hole in a stone slab, and a minor damage of a stone rib, had not much consequence on the bearing capacity of the dome. Since the bomb-shell, fortunately, missed the rib (which is a primary structural element), and caused damage to the slab in the upper part of the dome, where stresses and strains are extremely low, the injury has not jeopardize the stability of the dome, nor (consequently) the overall stability of the structure. The authors emphasize the convenience of computational analyses, especially of new-developed neural networks, in the analysis of ancient buildings' structures.
