Duration of bilabial consonants in esophageal and normal speakers
In patients submitted to total laryngectomy, relationships between the articulatory, phonatory and respiratory levels are substentially impaired, and thus require a new semsorimotor organization of speech production to be established. In this study, duration of bilabial consonants /p/, /b/ and /m/ was measured in three groups of speakers: skilled esophageal speake (SES), unskilled esophageals speaker (USES), and normal speaker (NOS). Comparison of the results obtained in the three groups showed the articulation of the consonants to be either significantly (USES) or nonsignificantly (SES) prolonged in esophageal speakers as compared to normal one (NOS).
