Histological observation on the antler-pedicle connection of the fallow deer (Dama dama L.)
Histomorpohlogical characteristics of the antler-pedicle connection in the male fallow deer(from the "Brijuni" - National Park) were studied. The distal antler tips of male animals were colected post-mortem, decalcifyed and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin, PAS and Alcian blue. Antler-pedicle connection showed special characteristics of bone junction, with specifically random order of osteocytes in bone structure. In pedicle region histological and histoenzymatic investigation showed significant differences in skin structure with more colagen and less elastic fibres.
