Evaluation of efficacy of endoscopic sinus surgery in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis according to our Severity Staging System

The puropse of this presentation was to create a user-friendly functional severity staging system of CRS. The quality of life questionnaires and disability index appears to be good for research but too complicated and complex for everyday use in clinical practice. 242 patients with CRS who underwent FESS filled in the questionnaire including 20 questions. Physical, functional and emotional impact of sinonasal disorder were measured. The questionnaire considered subjectively the score of intensity and rate of 10 physical symptoms and 10 emotional and functional symptoms. Symptom score was from 0.1 to 6. After data analysis was made, the questionnaire was reduced to 10 questions related to symptoms the patients mostly complained of. We made disability index. CRS was classified in four degrees: from 0 to 3. Patients with score of 0.1 tp 0.9 have the 0 degree of CRS (initial disease), patients with score of 1 to 2 have 1 degree of CRS (mild disease), patients with score from 2.1 to 4 have 2 degree of CRS (moderate disease) and patients with score from 4.1 to 6 have 3 degree of CRS (severe disease). Our data showed that considering this new functional severity staging system the majority of patients had either 3 to 2 degree of CRS. After therapy they had at least one degree and usually 2 degrees improvement of the disease. Our severity staging system of CRS would help clinicians in planning and evaluation of treatment, to predict prognosis of disease and to facilitate the exchange of information.
