Speech Modulation Quality Evaluation
This work describes the method for the perceptual evaluation of speech quality that is called modulation quality evaluation (MQE). What differs the MQE method from ITU_T recommended methods (PSQM, MNB, PESQ) is its theoretical psycho-acoustical foundation. The MQE uses psycho-acoustical relation which states that change of loudness DN has perceptual significance that is more closely related to the loudness modulation DN/N, than to the change of loudness itself. In other words, the work is based on paradigm that the most important speech characteristic is its modulation. Perceptual sensitivity to change of the modulation is modeled by using just noticeable differences in the intensity domain. This resulted in simple implementation of the fast MQE algorithm that can be used in a real-time.
