Decsriptive and prescriptive approaches in the linguistic study of translation

It is clear from the survey of the translation process that the linguistic study of translation has a predominantly descriptive orientation. This is in keeping with the situation in other scientific disciplines, notably linguistics, which profess and practice the principle of priority of description over prescription. Descriptions are taken to be objective, value-free statements and therefore they stand higher in the ranks of scientific procedures than prescriptions, which are subjective statements of the author's value judgement.

description vs prescription in linguistics and translation studies; translational norms; laws of translational behaviour; relativism in description and prescription
