Classical protein, HLA and STR polymorphisms in the population of the Island of Krk (Croatia)
Red cell enzymes and proteins, HLA class I and II, and STRs were analysed in the subpopulations from six villages on the island of Krk, Croatia. Allele frequencies (gene counting and maximum likelihood) and genetic distances (DA) were computed and used for constructing the UPGMA phylogenetic tree. Mantel's test was used for calculating coefficients of correlation between genetic distance matrix, geographic distance matrices and migration kinship matrices. Genetic structure of the subpopulations of the island of Krk showed concordance with the main ethnohistoric events. Furthermore, genetic variation (especially STR data) followed some of the predictions based on the migration and mobility patterns on the island. Finally, geographic distances (especially with respect to STR data) seemed to play an important role as a barrier to the gene flow.
