Reconstruction of a high clayey railway embankment using piles

This paper describes three possible solutions for reconstructing the railway embankment on the railway line between Zagreb and Rijeka. For this purpose, site investigations and laboratory tests were carried out to obtain characteristic values of parameters necessary for embankment stability calculations. Of the three solutions considered, only the solution involving the use of piles requires no railway traffic disruptions. Therefore, possible pile lengths were analysed to found out that a factor of safety sharply increased as the pile length was increased from 8 up to 12 metres.
