Service life design of marine structures - comparison between probabilistic and deterministic approach
Service life design of reinforced concrete structures is still based on a deterministic approach, as prescribed deem-to-satisfy rules in actual European standards. It is clear that this approach doesn’ t cover all the uncertainties of the concrete quality, the variability of the environmental parameters and different deterioration mechanisms. In this paper is given the analysis of the existing concrete structure at the Adriatic coast, which was exposed to marine environment for few decades. On the basis of materials data and the exposure time, a service life of this structure is calculated with different prediction models, both with deterministic and probabilistic approach. The results from the deterministic and probabilistic approach are compared. The deterministic approach is based on mean values of the governing parameters, and in the probabilistic approach are used distribution functions of these parameters (based on the mean values and their calculated standard deviations). Probability of corrosion with the real input material parameters is calculated by application of DuraCrete approach. These results are compared with the results from two deterministic models, based on chloride difussion process.
