The Formation of Dalmatian Urban Nobility: Examples of Split, Trogir and Zadar
In this dissertation I explored the possible factors that could have enabled the families of the urban elite of three Dalmatian cities - Zadar, Split, and Trogir - to successfully change from the social-economic to a legal category of urban nobility, in order to establish the most important ways of their success. This change was marked by closing of the great councils of the city after which only men whose ancestors were the members of these councils could have the right to be the members. As crucial factors of the formation of Dalmatian urban nobility, I consider the holding of the most important communal offices, control of the main economical resources, and family connections to other distinguished families of the community. When comparing the three cities, in terms of the formation of a noble class, Zaratin nobility preceded Split and Trogir to some extent, its elite being more numerous, and richer. Economic devolopment seems to have been reflected in the development of the society as well.
