How to Optimise the Use of Coiled Tubing in Drilling Process
Coiled tubing (CT) is used in works that can be devided in two categories. That are production services, and drilling services. The use for comlestion and work-over was the original application and represents today about 75% of CT spending, growing about 10% per year. Second category, drilling services represents 25% of spending, but is growing about 30% per year. The advantage when compared to conventional threaded pipes is that continuous CT can be tripped into and out of the well more quickly. Much more such continuous pipe can be tripped while the well is under pressure, without killing a well. The reason for this growth is in improving quality of the tube itself, better tracking of pipe use, and "spent life" prediction. Technical and technological improvements have made coiled tubing more feasible and economical to drill with, but its technology is still developed. Each project must be evaluated and a thorough review is required to ensure that the coiled tubing is capable to sustain drilling requirements.
