Depth profiling of Ink-Jet prints
Low viscosive water-based ink jet inks penetrate the paper printing substrate. Only a very thin ink layer remains at the prints surface. The migration of the penetrated ink differ from uncoated to coated papers. Among coated papers the type of coating influences the depth of ink penetration as well as the ink composition. Dye-based inks penetrate deeper than the pigment-based inks. By the use of diverse non destructive and destructive methods, it is possible to obtain an insight into the vertical and radial ink distribution in z-direction of the print. Non-destructive methods, such as Raman depth profiling or Confocal laser scanning microscopy are spectroscopic and microscopic methods, non invasive for the studied object. On the contrary, the preparation of the cross section of the print is the destructive method. The real image of the prints z-direction can be obtained from the cross section either by Scanning electron microscopy or by Light microscopy. Cross section images can also be used for a detailed study of coating layers and base paper structure.
