HLA antigens of multiple sclerosis patients in Istria, western Croatia
This study analysis HLA antigenes in native population of MS patients in Istria, western Croatia, area of a high risk for MS (prevalence about 45/100000 hab.). The patients were selected by Poser's diagnostic criteria for MS. The control group consisted of unrelated natives of Istria, chosen at random who were not hosts of hereditary diseases. The distribution of HLA antigens was tested with relative risk (RR test), etiologic (EF) and preventive (PF) factors. MS patients in Istria show an increased RR for antigens DR2 (RR 4.012), B18 (RR 2.111), A2 (RR 1.918) and A1 (RR 1.745). The highest value of EF was found for the antigens DR3 (EF 0.027) and the highest value of PF was found for the antigens B14 (PF 0.163). The research confirms the association of the antigen DR2 with MS patients on the Mediterranien coast.
