Simpatical activity in stuttering

Stutterers describe neurovegetative manifestations such as excessive heart beating and/or heart rate, sweating of palms, flushing, and disturbances in contractions of respiratory and fonatory muscles. Our study aims to determine relationship between simpatical hyperactivity and severity of stuttering before and after a nonmedicational treatment. Blood pressure, heart rate, sweating of palms and concentration of catecholamines were measured before and after the treatment, during silent and speech in order to determine simpatical activity in our test group of 8 stutterers. Concentrations of catecholamines were within physiological boundaries, both before and after the treatment. However, significant decrease in catecholamine concentration occurred after the treatment. A significant speech improvement was achieved, also. We conclude that increased simpatical activity during speech in stutterers is consequence of speech’ s stress influence, not that increased simpatical activity causes the stuttering.
