Electron Selection and Identification in CMS

The selection and identification of primary electrons for physics analysis in CMS is described. Electrons in the transverse momentum range from 5 to 50 \GeV/c are considered. Different electron measurement patterns ("classes") are distinguished depending on the amount of bremsstrahlung photons emitted in the tracker volume and their possible conversion in the tracker material. New observables combining tracking and calorimetry information are introduced for the study of class-dependent electron identification performances.
