Society in transition and adolescent development
It is always an intriguing question how a certain person evolves into a certain special personality. One of the ways we can begin the research this problem lies in observing the development of those aspects of a personality that simultaneously bring about a relative continuity and selfsameness though ever changing in time, and by continuity with the cultural group though remaining uniquely individual. The feeling of continuity within oneself (selfsameness) and continuity (non-conformism) with ones culture are probably the two most significant criteria of mental health. This paper emphasizes the process of identification which can be defined as pertaining to the means by which part of the psychic structure of one person tends to become like that of another to whom he or she is emotionally related in a significant way. The contents of identifications are best expressed through social, sexual, family and work relationships. From the time of formal schooling onwards the identifications become specially sensitive upon the characteristics of the system of values and beliefs of the society in which the person lives and grows. In our work we were especially interested to which extent do the changes in social reality influence the relationship of manifest and latent contents and their eventual meaning upon the psycho-pathogenesis.
