Beautemps-Beaupre's Contribution to Eastern Adriatic Hydrography in 1806 and 1808-1809

With the 17^th century weakening of conjuncture on Mediterranean as an outcome of the Great geographical discoveries and opening of new significant traffic corridors (the routes to India and America), the centre of maritime cartography shifts to European Atlantic coast. First in the Netherlands and then in France there is a significant advancement in geographic and cartographic notions during 17^th and 18^th centuries. The Adriatic, which was interesting to the Mediterranean and European cartographers during late Middle Ages, subsequently, due to lack of new information, does not receive the same kind of attention as in the Middle Ages. The cartographic work of Vincenzo Maria Coronelli is an exception to the pattern. An outcome would be numerous cartographic works that are mainly compilations with insignificant advancement. Namely, organisational and financial help of the state was of utmost necessity in order to achieve headway in global geography and cartography. This new quality is gained in 1806 and 1808-1809, during French administration, with the hydrographic, oceanographic and other research of Charles François Beautemps-Beaupré, those days leader of French hydrography. He performs hydrographic survey of Piran, Umag, Luka Mirna, Poreč, Limski channel, Pula, Zadar and Zadar channel, Šibenik and Šibenik channel, Rogoznica, Split, Dubrovnik littoral from Slano to Molunat and Boka Kotorska. The survey results produced higher quality charts and new Pilot manuals for sailing, as well as new impetus of hydrographic, oceanographic, geomagnetic and similar surveys that would result in high level of Adriatic cartographic quality at the end of 30ies of the 19^th century. In this respect French formation of the Geographic depot as a forerunner of Military-geographic institute of Milan and C. F. Beautemps-Beaupré results of scientific hydrographic surveys have utmost significance.
