Black extrinsic teeth discoloration and DMTF index relationship
Introduction and aim of the study: Black extrinsic teeth discoloration appears clinically as a thin line deposits in close proximity to gingival margins on the buccal and lingual surface of posterior teeth (Figure 1). It represents a significant esthetic problem because individuals cannot control it by standard oral hygiene. The aim of this study was to evaluate if there is any relationship between black extrinsic teeth discoloration and DMFT index and oral hygiene habits. Materials and Methods: Experimental group consisted of sixty individuals 15-25 years old divided into two groups, the study group and control group, each consisting of 30 patients. DMFT index was established clinically by teeth examination using standard probe and mirror. Information about oral hygiene habit was collected by interviewing patients. Results: The results obtained revealed that individuals with black teeth discolorations more often brush their teeth, , have less amalgam and composite fillings and fewer extracted teeth (p<0.05) (Table 1).
