Spomenici VII. legije na području Tilurija (Tilurium)
This article discusses the funerary monuments (stelae) of legionaries of the legio VII found in the region of the central military fortress of Tilurium (Trilj, Gardun, Vojnić, Dicmo). Altrough the actual number destignating the legion was not preserved on several fragmentary inscriptions (5 out of a total 21), they were justifiably included in the analysis along with the other 16 completely preserved funerary monuments. The reason for their classification into the category of those attributed to the VII legion are manifold, ranging from the very site of discovery, the style, and the decoration, as well as numerous epigraphic elements. The analysis covers the formulation of the name, the onomastics (praenomina, nomina, and cognomina), the relation between the commemorated individual and the dedicant, the tribus and domus (representing the origo of the deceased), the officium, stipendia, and anni of each legionary, as well as individual abbreviations. Interesting statistical indicators have been extracted for several factors. In addition to the above, a brief paleographic overview is also given for the dating of the tombstones (i.e. whether the legionaries belonged to legio VII or legio VII C.p.f.) In conclusion, the need is emphasized for a systematic study of all the sepulchral inscriptions that belonged to the legionaries of the VII legion in the province of Dalmatia. Such a collective examination should be performed in two phases: a detailed epigraphic analysis and stylistic - decorative analysis of the funerary monuments.
