Antički jantar u Liburniji
The area of Liburnia knew amber in prehistoric times and what is more it kept dealing with this fossil Oligocene rosin after the Roman conquest. Of all ancient sites from this territory, considerably rich in amber products are for sure Starigrad (Argyruntum), Nin (Aenona), Zadar (Iader) and Podgrađe near Benkovac (Asseria). Scores of genuinely manufactered amber examples appearing from these necropolis stay side by side with the best amber objects ever made. The repertoire of objects and representations on them are rather wide. All chosen and worked out objects, after their motifs and quality of manufacturing can be paralleled to the best amber items from Aquileia, dating from the early 1st century to the 2nd century AD. Some of the examples seem to be very close to the Slovene amber objects, particularly those from Ptuj (Poetovio).
