Bolus death (mors e bolo) in psychiatric patients

In the last decade, bolus death as one of the causes of sudden death in neurologic and psychiatric patients has been even more increasingly reported. In this study, cases of bolus death in psychiatric patients treated at the Rab-Kampor Psychiatric Hospital, recorded between 1961 and 1995 were retrospectively analyzed. Very careful follow-up of the patient, his nutritional habits, clinical picture and numerous situational factors is an important predictor of the patient`s belonging to the risk group for possible bolus death. Techinical equipment and appropriate staff training and readiness for emergency interventions in case of retained bolus are important for reducition of lethal autcome in cases of food suffication.
