The effect of silica fume on corrosion resistance of portland cement mortars containing limestone
The present work examines simultaneously effects of limestone and of silica fume on corrosion resistance of cement mortars exposed to sulphate attack, c(sodium sulphate)= 84 g/L. In the mortars 15 mass% of cement was substituted by finely ground limestone. The resistance to sulphate attack was determined for mortar samples with different addition of silica fume (2-15 mass% on the expance of cement) by measuring the volume change due to expansion and the changes in the elasticy modulus. The quantity of the unleached lime and the microstructural changes during the corrosion activity were examined by means of DTA, XRD and SEM methods. The results show that a simultaneous addition of finely ground limestone and silica fume contributes to a higher corrosion resistance of mortars exposed to sulphate attack.
